Branded Video Intro — Subjectively Offensive

9 seconds

This project grew out of an earlier era of my first YouTube channel, Subjectively Offensive. By this point, the channel had changed considerably from its original self-help and mental-health focus, and I was experimenting with a much darker, more intense visual identity built around exploring uncomfortable ideas.

The channel's tagline was “The Truth Is Triggering,” and I wanted the opening sequence to make that statement feel like something rather than simply placing the words on screen.

I started with time-lapse footage of star trails rotating around Polaris. That imagery had become personally associated with the idea of searching for truth, and it gave me the visual foundation for the sequence. From there, I began experimenting with typography, eventually purchasing a font because I couldn't find a free option that had the visual impact I wanted.

But typography alone wasn't enough.

I wanted the sequence to create anticipation followed by impact. Instead of revealing the entire tagline immediately, I animated the words gradually as an increasingly intense sound built underneath them. The viewer doesn't initially know exactly what the phrase will become. As the sound continues rising, more of the message is revealed until it finally resolves into:

THE TRUTH IS TRIGGERING.

At that moment, the restrained buildup breaks. The typography begins shaking, the sound hits with a heavy distorted impact, and a glitch effect disrupts the entire image rather than affecting only the text.

Each of those elements developed through experimentation. Shaking typography without sound felt strange. Sound without enough visual disruption didn't create the impact I wanted. Affecting only the words made the effect feel disconnected from the image. By repeatedly watching the sequence, changing individual elements and asking what felt missing, the final moment gradually emerged through the combination of motion, typography, sound design, distortion and timing.

After the intensity peaks, everything suddenly stops.

The screen cuts to black.

The Subjectively Offensive logo appears by itself.

That contrast became the final payoff: buildup, disruption, silence, identity.

What appears on screen as a relatively short intro was actually the result of repeatedly asking the same creative question: if “The Truth Is Triggering” is the idea, what should that idea look and sound like?
