Content Format & Creative Direction — Autopilot to Alive

1 min & 9 seconds

Autopilot to Alive began simply: me talking to a camera with very little understanding of short-form video. For roughly my first 25 videos, I filmed vertically on my phone, experimented heavily with captions and on-screen text, and gradually learned how presentation, delivery, and format affected the way an idea was received.

As the channel developed, I became more intentional about speaking specifically to men and began experimenting with a completely different presentation style. That led to the creation of Big Merc—a more direct, blunt and confrontational persona, supported by changes in wardrobe, lighting, delivery, topics, and overall visual identity.

The shift wasn't planned from the beginning. It grew out of experimentation, audience response, analytics, and repeatedly asking how the message could be communicated more effectively. The difference was significant: videos that had previously received around 158 views began reaching 754, then 1,000+ as the format continued to develop.

What started as simply learning how to make short-form videos gradually became an exercise in creative direction, audience awareness, character development, and content format evolution.
