Character-Based Visual Storytelling — Unmasked
1 min & 9 seconds
After creating Big Merc, I spent the next month and a half developing that character across 41 videos. But eventually I realized something: Big Merc wasn't me. He represented one part of me—a louder, angrier, more confrontational state that had become especially prominent during a difficult period in my life.
That realization became the foundation for Unmasked.
If Big Merc represented anger, defensiveness and aggression, what about the other states I experienced? I created Shadow to represent the more vulnerable side—the sadness, fear, loneliness and hopelessness that could exist underneath that anger. Visually, I differentiated him through darker clothing, a beanie, subdued lighting and a much more withdrawn performance.
But neither character represented the whole person. That led to the third character: Truth—a calmer perspective capable of seeing beyond the distorted lens of either extreme.
With those three characters, I could take an internal conflict and make it visible.
Instead of simply talking to the audience about emotional states, Unmasked allowed me to dramatize them. One character could express anger, another vulnerability, and another could challenge both perspectives. Topics were drawn from experiences and struggles I understood personally, then developed into scenarios other men could recognize in their own lives.
The first Unmasked video, released November 29, 2025, received 861 views, but more importantly, the format opened an entirely new creative direction for the channel. I was no longer limited to one person delivering one perspective to a camera. I could use character, dialogue, wardrobe, lighting, performance and editing to represent the conflicting thoughts that can exist within the same person.
What began with Big Merc as an experiment in presentation eventually became character-based visual storytelling—a way of turning an invisible internal experience into something an audience could actually watch unfold.
